PSA: my gas gauge read a quarter tank when it was empty, and the tow guy in Bakersfield told me it happens more than people think
Two weeks ago I was on Highway 58 outside Bakersfield at 11pm when the needle sat just under a quarter tank and the engine just quit on me. I had it towed to a shop on Chester Ave and the mechanic said the sending unit in the tank reads wrong below a quarter on a lot of cars, so the gauge is basically a guess at that point. I asked why nobody tells you this and he just laughed and said the manual calls it a guide, not a measurement. Does anyone here actually track their real miles per tank instead of trusting the needle, or am I the only one who learned this the hard way?
