My uncle's ham radio hobby made me question everything about encrypted messaging apps

Last Sunday my uncle Vinny spent an hour explaining how he talks to strangers in Tokyo with a $200 radio and zero internet, and honestly it sounded more secure than anything my phone does. He said the whole point isn't hiding what you say but making it useless to anyone listening without the right context. Does anyone else feel like we've overcomplicated privacy, or is there real value in old school ways we just forgot about?

Is it weird that the real appeal might be the lack of a digital footprint altogether, like even if someone intercepts the signal, there's no metadata trail connecting you to the message? Because with apps, the content can be encrypted but the fact that you're talking at all is usually logged somewhere.
