I finally chose between backing up to the cloud or keeping it all local

Last month I had to decide between paying for Google Drive every month or just buying a couple of external hard drives. I went with the hard drives because I figured once I paid, it was done. But then my cat knocked one off my desk and it started clicking. I lost about three years of photos and random documents before I could get it to a shop in Portland. The guy there told me they recovered maybe 60 percent of it. So now I'm thinking maybe the cloud subscription was the smarter move after all, even at $10 a month. Has anyone else had major regrets going one way or the other with this stuff?

Wow, the cat knocking it off the desk... I can't believe that happened. I would have been so upset losing three years of photos. You must have felt sick watching it fall. I've always been a local backup person myself. I keep two drives and rotate them to a safety deposit box every few months. It's a hassle but I'm too afraid of a house fire or something wiping everything out at once.

The safety deposit box rotation is actually smart, I never thought of that lol. I do local backups too but mostly just keep two drives in different rooms, which is dumb if the whole house goes up. Might steal your idea and grab a small fireproof safe at least for one of them. Three years of photos gone though, man that's rough, makes me want to actually set a calendar reminder to rotate my stuff.

Watching it fall in slow motion is exactly what happened! I gasped just reading that because I can picture the whole thing. Three years of photos gone like that makes my stomach hurt. You must have felt totally sick when that hard drive hit the floor and started making those clicking sounds.
