Hot take: That "birds aren't real" thing started as a joke but people actually believe it now

I was at a party in Austin last Saturday and this guy spent 20 minutes explaining how pigeons are government drones. I asked him why my neighbor's bird poops on his car every morning if it's a surveillance device. He just said "that's what they want you to think." I get that conspiracy theories can be fun but the bird one started as a college kid's parody project back in 2017. Now I see videos with 50k likes treating it like real intel. Has anyone else run into people who take this stuff seriously or am I just finding the wrong crowd?

My cousin in Phoenix bought a "bird deactivation kit" off Etsy last month for 40 bucks. I told him it was a scam but he pulled up some Reddit thread with 200 comments debating drone models. Honestly though, I'm starting to wonder if half the joke is lost on people now. I used to think it was just a funny meme but after seeing a guy build a Faraday cage for his backyard feeder, I'm not so sure anymore.

Maybe it's just me but people will believe anything these days.
