Hot take: I was using paste wax totally wrong on my furniture pieces for years

I finally figured this out yesterday while refinishing an old dresser from my aunt. I kept getting these cloudy streaks that would never buff out smooth, and I blamed the wax brand. Then a guy at the hardware store in Portland pointed out I was putting it on too thick and letting it sit too long before buffing. He told me to apply a paper-thin coat and buff it off within 5 minutes, and it came out perfect for the first time ever. Has anyone else had a basic technique click way later than it should have?

Oh wow, so the instructions on the can actually meant something. I always thought "thin coat" was just a suggestion for people with more patience than me. At least you only wasted years instead of decades like some of us.
