Decided between storing my photos on Google Drive vs. an external hard drive

I had to pick between cloud storage and a local backup for all my family photos from the past 5 years. Google Drive seemed easy but the $120 a year kept nagging me, so I went with a 2TB Seagate hard drive for $60. Three months in, my kid knocked a cup of juice onto my laptop and the hard drive was sitting right next to it - ruined everything. Has anyone else had a backup plan backfire in a way you didn't see coming?

Is it though? I mean it sucks for sure, but "brutal" feels a bit dramatic for what sounds like a regular setback. Plenty of people have faced way worse and bounced back just fine. Maybe they're just having a bad week and blowing it out of proportion.
