Appreciation post: my uncle's 20 minute rule about conspiracy videos saved me from a bad rabbit hole
Back in 2019 my uncle Ray sat me down after Thanksgiving dinner in Cleveland and gave me one rule for watching conspiracy stuff online. He said if a video is over 20 minutes and still hasn't shown a single source or document, close it. At the time I thought it was a dumb rule because some long videos felt more detailed. Fast forward 3 years and I was deep into a 2 hour video about a local water plant that kept name dropping "insiders" and never showed one page of anything. I remembered his rule and shut it off around minute 40. About a week later a buddy sent me a 12 minute clip from a city council meeting with actual documents on screen and it was way more useful. I still haven't gone back to the long ones. Anyone else have a version of the 20 minute rule that keeps them from wasting a whole night?
