Tried using a magnesium float on a warm day in Phoenix
Figured it'd give me a tighter finish but the sun hit it and I got drag marks everywhere. Had to rewet and start over with a wood float. Anyone else burn their slab this way?

Man, that's a tough lesson. What kind of mix were you running when you tried the mag float, was it a standard 5 sack or something a little richer? I'm curious how the psi played into it, because that sun in Phoenix is no joke.

Hang on, I gotta push back a little. A 5 sack mix in July isn't the problem, it's a skill issue. The mag float skating is a sign you're working it too early, not that the mix is too rich. I've done plenty of 4.5 sack mixes in 110 degree heat with a lower psi and it finishes out just fine if you're keeping a spray bottle handy and staying ahead of the set. The sun isn't the enemy, bad timing and a lazy finish is what burns you, not the cement content.

Buddy of mine tried that same thing on a 5 sack mix out in Tucson last July. Said the mag float just kind of skated across the surface, it was like trying to spread frosting on a hot griddle. Guess the psi was too low and the sun cooked it before he could even get a rhythm going.
