Switched to a heavy broom finish on my last driveway job and it made a huge difference

I always used a light broom before, but on a 400 square foot driveway in Austin last month I went with a stiff bristle push broom instead. The texture grabbed better in the heat and the customer actually called to say the slip resistance felt way safer. Has anyone else noticed a difference with heavier brooms?

Oh man, that's interesting! I used a heavy broom on a small walkway last summer and honestly it was a pain because it left these really deep lines that I couldn't smooth out. But your point about slip resistance makes total sense, especially in the heat. I wonder if the concrete was curing a little different with that heavier texture too, like maybe it helped with trapping a bit of moisture or something. I've only messed around with it a couple times but now I'm curious to try it on a bigger pour.

My neighbor's driveway got the heavy broom treatment last spring and we both noticed it held up way better through winter than my smoother finish. The trick that helped her was dragging a wet sponge float over the top once it started to set, which softened those ridges just enough. I'm planning to try that combo on my patio next month because the grip really does make a difference when things get slick.
