Old timer told me to wet the forms before pouring, finally listened

Back in 2018 a guy named Hank who'd been doing flatwork since Nixon was president kept telling me to soak my forms the night before a pour. I figured it was just old man superstition and skipped it on a big driveway job in Tucson. That slab cracked like a jigsaw puzzle within two months because the dry wood sucked all the moisture out of the edges. Has anyone else had an old-school tip that actually saved their pour?

Yeah but that's not really about moisture content, that's about the wood swelling and tightening your joints.
