Old timer told me my broom finish looked like a 'nervous porcupine'

I was finishing a small patio in Knoxville last month, and this retired finisher from the house next door came over. He said, 'Son, you're pushing that broom like you're scared of it, you gotta pull it steady and light.' I changed my grip and slowed way down, just dragging the bristles. The difference on the next section was night and day, way more even lines. How do you guys keep a consistent pull on bigger slabs when you have to move fast?

Pulling steady and light" is the whole key to most things.

Yeah, I've never pulled anything steady or light in my life.

Man, it's wild how that same idea shows up everywhere once you start looking. I've noticed it in cooking, in fixing things around the house, even in how I talk to people. Forcing things just makes a mess most of the time.
