Showerthought: I was cleaning out a client's old Dell OptiPlex 9020 and realized I've been wasting hours on the wrong thing.

For years, I'd spend 20 minutes blowing dust out of every single fan and heatsink with canned air, thinking that was the key to fixing overheating. This machine was still running hot after I did that. The real fix was just replacing the dried up thermal paste on the CPU, which took maybe 5 minutes and cost a dollar. I was so focused on the visible dust I missed the basic maintenance. How many other simple fixes are we all overlooking because we're stuck on the obvious stuff?

My buddy's PS4 sounded like a jet engine for two years.
