Serious question, why does everyone skip testing the power supply first when a PC won't turn on?
Had a guy drop off a tower at my bench on Tuesday, said it died mid game and now nothing happens when he hits the button. I asked what he already tried and he goes, oh I swapped the RAM, reseated the GPU, cleared the CMOS, even bought a new motherboard. Four days of his life and about 180 bucks gone. I pulled the PSU out, jumped the green wire with a paperclip, and the fan didn't even twitch. Dead as a doornail. The whole time the fix was a 60 dollar unit he could have tested in five minutes with a 20 dollar tester from Micro Center. What gets me is this isn't the first one this month, it's like people treat the power supply as the last thing to check because it's boring. You can't diagnose anything downstream if the thing isn't even feeding power, that's just basic order of operations. So how do you all walk customers through this without sounding like a jerk about it?
