PSA: That 'free' diagnostic tool from a random forum gave my shop a 3-day virus cleanup.

I downloaded a flash drive tool from a forum last Tuesday because a client's PC had a tough boot issue. It worked at first, but then it started spawning ads and locking up. Three days of scrubbing AV logs and reimagining 4 machines later, I swore off free tools from unknown sources. Now I only grab stuff from known vendors or trusted community lists. Has anyone else had a free tool bite them this bad?

Has anyone else noticed how this same pattern plays out everywhere now though? Like people grabbing sketchy free VPNs to watch one show and ending up with their data sold or their router hijacked. It's the same thing with those "cleaner" apps people download on their phones - they promise to speed things up but just fill your phone with ads and trackers. Seems like the whole internet runs on this trap now, where the free thing costs you way more in time and headaches than just paying for the legit version upfront.

Three days sounds like a nightmare honestly.

Man, three days straight would be brutal. Had a two day one once and by the end I was hallucinating a little from pure exhaustion, just seeing shapes in the dark. The worst part is when you start getting really cold because your body just can't regulate anymore. No amount of coffee or energy drinks really helps after a certain point, it just makes you jittery and still tired. Hope you got some good rest after that nightmare.
