I thought those cheap thermal paste syringes were all the same until a repair last month.
Had a gaming PC in the shop with overheating issues after a fresh build. I used a five dollar tube I had on hand, same as always. Temps were still hitting 90C under load. On a hunch, I cleaned it off and used a more expensive paste a coworker recommended. The idle temp dropped by 12 degrees immediately. I guess the compound really does matter for high-end chips. What's your go-to paste for a tough thermal job?

Honestly, I've used that generic white paste from the computer store for years on dozens of builds. My old i7-9700K ran fine with it for five years. Max631's laptop fix probably worked because any fresh paste beats old dried paste, not because of some special brand. For most chips, the application method and mounting pressure matter way more than the fancy silver stuff.

My old laptop taught me the same lesson last year. It would just shut off during video calls until I swapped the dried up paste for some fresh Arctic Silver. That moment when you see the temp drop on the first boot is pure relief. It's funny how the smallest, cheapest part can be the one thing holding everything back. I keep a tube of Noctua's paste in my desk drawer now for any serious fixes.
