Everyone pushes SSDs for old office towers, but a $40 7200rpm drive saved a 12 machine rollout in Pittsburgh last month
The going advice on here is to swap every old spinning drive for an SSD, but I ran into a floor of 12 Dell Optiplex machines from 2015 in a Pittsburgh insurance office that only do email and one terrible database app. I tried two of them with cheap 240GB SSDs and the boot was faster, sure, but the database still crawled because the app chokes on the same 8GB of RAM either way, and I was burning $45 a pop. I put a $40 7200rpm Hitachi drive in the other ten, cloned the old image over, and nobody has said a word in five weeks because the actual bottleneck was never disk speed. The SSD crowd will hate this, but for read-heavy office junk a decent platter drive is still the smarter spend. Has anyone else been burned chasing SSD upgrades when the real problem was somewhere else in the chain?
