Am I the only one who doesn't bother with anti-static straps?
I've never ruined a part by skipping them.

Wait, you've never fried a component even once? Static damage doesn't always show up right away. A part can work for a while and then fail early. I've seen it happen to friends who thought they were being careful. That's why I never skip the strap.

My friend Jake installed a new motherboard in his computer last spring. It ran perfectly for six weeks before it suddenly wouldn't boot one morning. The tech who looked at it said the failure pattern pointed to static shock during the build. Jake always joked about anti-static gear being overkill, but he bought a wrist strap the same day. He learned the hard way that stuff can seem fine until it just isn't.
