Working a job in the Gulf back in '08 changed how I think about comms gear.
We were on a salvage op, maybe 150 feet down. My old hardwire unit failed, just static. Had to finish the cut using hand signals with my tender. Got the job done, but it was slow. After that, I bought my own wireless system, a Kirby Morgan EXO. Anyone else make a big gear switch after a single bad dive?

Man, that'll do it. My wake-up call was cheaper but way more embarrassing. Got tangled in old fishing line in a murky quarry. My buddy just watched me flail. Felt like a hooked fish doing the world's dumbest dance. Bought a proper line cutter the next day and felt like a total rookie.

Tangled fishing line is no joke. Reminds me of the time I got my kayak paddle wrapped in a mess of old monofilament on the river. Spent twenty minutes spinning in slow circles trying to cut it with my car keys. Ended up just having to break the paddle down and hand-pick it all off while the current took me. You never realize how strong that stuff is until you're stuck in it.

Oh man, @dixon.rose, that's the kind of story that sticks with you. It's funny how those small, silly scares can really drive the lesson home. I'm just glad your buddy was there, even if he was just watching the show.
