Hot water heater in the dive shack, why did no one tell me to check the anode rod?

After 4 years of diving in Port Angeles, I noticed my drysuit undergarments smelled like rotten eggs every third dive. Turns out the anode rod in our compressor's water separator was shot, and all that sulfide was baking into my gear. Do you guys actually check that thing on a schedule, or am I the only one who learned this the hard way?
