Hot take: Hand signals aren't the best way to talk underwater
I use a small slate for all my detailed comms. It just works better for me.

Last week my frantic arm waving actually HELPED find my keys fast, unlike @shah.jesse's method.

Hand signals for dropping stuff are common. I always wave my arms around like a confused traffic cop. It never helps find the lost thing. Mostly just lets everyone know I'm clumsy.
