That's funny you say that because I just read about how someone found a first print of Transformers #1 in a dollar bin back in 2019 and flipped it for like 800 bucks. It's wild how much gatekeeping can backfire on you when you don't know what you're actually sitting on. Your LCS guy probably saved you from making a mistake you'd regret later, which is more than most shop owners would do. I think the whole gatekeeping thing comes from a place of not trusting your own eye for what's good, you know?

Read a post last week where a guy grabbed a stack of old comics at a garage sale for 20 bucks and one of them turned out to be a first appearance of Wolverine in Hulk #181. Someone told him it was worth maybe 200 on a good day so he sold it cheap. Turns out it was a near mint copy that went for over 6 grand at auction. Stories like that make you wonder how many people have been talked out of a payday by someone who just assumed they knew better.
