Pro tip: I stopped reading variant covers and actually started paying attention

I used to buy every variant cover that came out... thinking they'd be worth something someday. After 3 years and maybe $400 wasted on duplicates, I realized most of them are just money grabs. Now I only pick up a variant if the art is by a specific artist I follow on Instagram. Anyone else feel like variants are a trap for collectors?

My cousin spent over $600 on those Supreme brick variants last year thinking they'd be some kind of art investment. It's the same trick they pull with sports cards and those limited edition Funko pops at Target. The whole thing is just manufactured scarcity to get people to buy more stuff they don't need. I noticed the same pattern with those "special edition" vinyl records at Urban Outfitters that are just a different color pressing. It's all about making you feel like you're missing out when really it's just a way to sell you the same product twice.

My sister dropped like $400 on those "limited edition" Supreme Oreos last year and they're just sitting in her closet going stale. She bought into the hype because the site said they were one-time only, but now you can find them for half that on eBay. It's the exact same manufactured urgency you're talking about, and people end up with overpriced junk they'd never buy otherwise.
