My neighbor's confused look at my shelf led to a cool comic swap

He saw my Batman books and asked if they were all the same story. I lent him Year One and he brought over a indie comic he liked. How do you start comic talks with people who live near you?

Avoid bringing up comics with neighbors altogether. I mean, it sounds cool but idk, you might just annoy them or make things awkward. What if they feel pressured to like your stuff or have to pretend to care? Once you lend a book, you're stuck waiting for it back or worrying they'll damage it. Maybe it's just me but I've seen these swaps turn into neighbor drama over nothing. Keep it simple and chat about the weather instead.

Shared hobbies can actually turn strangers into friends, but everyone's so scared of offending someone or creating obligation. I've seen similar things with garden tools or recipe swaps - one person lends a trowel, next thing you know you're having backyard barbecues together. The KEY is starting small, like your Batman book, and seeing if they're interested without pressure. These tiny exchanges build up community trust over time.

My cousin in Austin lent his vintage skateboard to a guy down the street. They started fixing up an old half-pipe together every weekend. It wasn't really about the skateboard, just an excuse to hang out. Now they run a small skate shop from that one loan. What small thing have you lent that turned into a bigger connection?
