Just realized reading crossovers in release order beats jumping between series

I spent 4 years reading X-Men comics by finishing one series at a time, like doing all of Claremont's run before touching Age of Apocalypse stuff. Last month I tried reading the Onslaught crossover following a chronological reading order from a fan site, and the whole story clicked way better when I saw how plots connected month to month. Has anyone else had a reading method that totally changed how a big event felt?

My method is to try chronological order once, get lost in 1990s timeline shenanigans, and then just read whatever cover art looks coolest. Your mileage may vary, but I've accepted that reading comics in any logical order is like herding cats with laser pointers.

My friend paid $40 for a 1990s X-Men comic, opened it, and found a pizza coupon inside.
