Hot take: buying variant covers is a waste of money compared to just getting the regular issue

I used to chase every exclusive variant cover I could find. Dropped $80 on a store variant for a Batman issue back in 2021. Now I just buy the standard cover and put that extra cash toward more back issues. What changed was realizing those variants don't hold value like people claim. My LCS owner even told me "90% of variants end up in the dollar bin after a year." Anyone else stop caring about variants?

Used to be a variant junkie myself, especially for any Spider-Man book. Thought I was being smart about it, building up value and all that. Then I watched a shelf full of those "limited" covers just sit there for years while the regular issues I skipped became hard to find. Seeing that dollar bin reality at my shop really flipped a switch for me. Now I'd rather grab five random back issues that tell a cool story than one fancy cover I'm scared to touch.

Yeah I was the same way for a while. I'd pass on regular covers thinking variants were the only ones worth grabbing. But seeing those same variants collect dust in the bargain bins at my shop really opened my eyes. Stories last way longer than a shiny cover ever will.
