Hot take: a shop guy in Dallas swore I'd hate Grant Morrison, and 6 years later I finally admit he was right
Back in 2019 I walked into a comic shop in Dallas and the guy behind the counter saw me grabbing the first volume of Animal Man. He told me straight up, skip Morrison, you want stuff with clear stakes and a hero you can root for, he will lose you by issue 4. I blew him off because everyone online acts like Morrison is the peak of the medium, so I bought it anyway plus Doom Patrol and Invisibles over the next year. Here is the thing, I read all of it, and I could not tell you what actually happened in half those books. The Invisibles especially felt like homework, I kept flipping back pages thinking I missed something and I never found it. Meanwhile the stuff he pointed me toward, Brubaker's Cap run, Gotham Central, I tore through in a week each. So now I am stuck on this: was that guy a real one who saved me money and years, or did I just not put in the work those books demand? Morrison fans, tell me what I am missing, because I want to believe there is something there and I keep bouncing off.
I had a similar thing with Radiohead where everyone told me I was wrong for not getting Kid A and then one day it just clicked on a long drive. Sometimes the art isn't bad, your brain just isn't ready for it yet, and forcing it never works. You gave Morrison six years and three tries, so at some point that's not on you anymore, it's just taste.
