Tried a red-green heatmap in my app last month and a user in Dallas let me know fast
Last month I shipped a dashboard update that used red and green cells to show good and bad numbers. I thought it looked clean. A guy named Marcus emailed me two days later saying he could not tell which of his five warehouses were behind because the whole grid looked the same brownish shade to him. He has deuteranopia. I sat in my chair for a minute feeling dumb. I played with it for about an hour and swapped the colors for a blue to orange scale, then added little up and down arrows on each cell so the color was not the only signal. He wrote back saying it worked right away. Now I am wondering how many other spots in my app lean on color alone, like the status dots on orders. What is your go to for showing good versus bad when you cannot trust red and green?
