Took me 45 minutes to read a subway map because of bad color choices

I was in Boston last month trying to get from Park Street to Harvard and the MBTA map nearly made me miss my train. The red and orange lines look almost identical to me and I had to ask three people which one went north. Why do transit designers keep using red and green together when 8% of men can't tell them apart? Has anyone else given up on a map system because of this stuff?

Lost my OWN dog in the subway once because I mixed up the line colors.

The "lost my own dog" part got me, because I've definitely felt that disoriented on transit. What actually helped me was pulling up the transit app on my phone and using the directions feature instead of trying to read the map colors. It takes the guesswork out and saves a ton of headache when your eyes just don't see the colors the way the designers planned.
