Tested my new dashboard on my colorblind buddy, total fail
I rolled out a fresh analytics dashboard at work last Tuesday, using only blue and green for status icons. My buddy Mike, who has deuteranopia, couldnt tell the safe from warning states at all, even with my neat legend. Turns out his contrast perception shifts in low light, and the office on 5th floor is dim by 3 PM. Has anyone else hit this wall with icon colors that check fine on a monitor but die in real world use?
Wait, he could see the colors fine on your monitor but not in the actual office? That low light thing is wild, I never would have guessed that contrast just falls apart like that as the day goes on. So even the legend you built did nothing for him because the icons themselves all looked the same shade of grayish blue? That is rough man, especially after you put all that work in. Honestly it makes me wonder how many other dashboards out there are quietly broken for people and nobody says a word.
