Rant: my old boss made us label every button with text too

Three years ago at a small shop in Dayton, we had a client who insisted every graph be readable in black and white, so I started putting patterns on bars and labels on buttons, not just colors. Last month I saw a new dashboard that only used red and green dots for status, and I couldn't tell which was which on my phone. Why do designers still skip patterns and text labels when it takes ten extra minutes and saves a whole group of users?
