My old traffic light icons were useless for my colorblind neighbor

I used red and green circles alone, but he said they looked identical. Now I always add a checkmark for go and an X for stop. What other icon combos work well?

Honestly, used to think color plus shape was overkill for simple icons. A post just like this one totally changed my view. Now I see adding a symbol or even a letter is key. For example, a green circle with a check is clear, but so is a red octagon shape alone, like a stop sign. Pairing a green upward arrow with a red hand icon also works without relying on color at all.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way too. My first app's "success" icon was just a green circle. My colorblind buddy thought every error message was a good thing. Not my best moment.
