My nephew couldn't tell which button was 'submit' on my website's form

He said 'the green one is just gray to me' while we were at my sister's house last weekend. What's the best way to label buttons besides color, maybe with icons or text?

Used to just slap a color on buttons and call it good. Your nephew's comment shows why that's a bad plan. Clear text labels are the most reliable, and adding a simple icon next to the word can give a second visual clue. It's about making things work for everyone, not just people who see color the same way you do.

That's a really good point from @christopherkim about clear text being the most reliable. So for a submit button, the word "Submit" or "Send" in bold text is key. An icon like a paper airplane right next to the word gives a second, non-color clue. The button's shape and placement matter too, like making it a solid rectangle that stands out from the other form fields. It's all about layering these things so if one cue is missed, another one gets the job done.
