Just hit 1000 downloads on my free icon set

I made a simple pack of interface icons a few months back, and the download count just passed a thousand. What got me was the feedback. Over 30 people emailed to thank me for using clear shapes and high contrast, not just color, to show different functions. One guy said it was the first time he could tell the 'save' and 'delete' icons apart without asking his wife. I never thought that small choice would matter so much to that many folks. How do you all test if your symbols work without color?

Have you tried running your icons through a simple desaturation filter while you're still designing them? That's what I do, it instantly shows you if you're relying too much on color contrast. Another thing that works well is just screenshotting your icon set, printing it in grayscale, and taping it up on your wall for a few days. You'll start noticing which ones blur together real quick. Also, swapping fill and stroke weights can be a lifesaver for things like save vs delete - make delete have a thicker outline or a slash through it that stays readable even in black and white.

Check them on a black and white printer.
