Hiking in the Rockies made me see the issue with color-only trail markers.

Using distinct shapes along with colors on trail blazes would help colorblind hikers stay on path.

Carve a simple shape next to the painted blaze. A triangle or square works. The paint will fade or wash off, but the carved symbol stays. I’ve had to re-mark local trails this way after heavy storms.

What knife do you use for carving those trail symbols?

Rain in Oregon washes out red blazes completely.
