My client's kid pointed out my logo looked like a different company
I was showing a branding draft and their 10 year old said the green and yellow combo reminded them of a sports team, not a tech startup. It made me realize I was picking colors based on trends, not the actual brand story. How do you guys make sure your palettes send the right message?

Oh man, that kid's a hero! (Honestly, kids cut through all the nonsense we adults pile on). I had a similar wakeup call when I was designing packaging for a local honey brand. I kept grabbing blues and grays (you know, trendy "clean" stuff) until my neighbor's daughter asked why the honey jar looked like a raincloud. It clicked - I had to stop picking colors from Pinterest and start from the product itself. So now I literally write down three words about the brand's personality first - like "warm, simple, honest" for the honey - and then I pull colors from nature or materials that match those words. For you, maybe ask your client what their grandma's kitchen looked like or what their favorite vacation spot feels like. Those concrete details always point to the right palette way better than any trend list.
