My art teacher said to never use pure black for shadows and I thought she was nuts

In my first graphic design job, I was doing a poster for a local band and kept using a straight 000000 black for all the drop shadows. My old teacher's voice popped into my head saying 'shadows have color, use a dark blue or purple instead.' I tried it, mixing a deep navy into the shadows instead, and the whole piece suddenly looked way more real and less flat. That one change made the red guitar on the poster look like it was actually sitting on the stage. Has anyone else had a simple color rule from school actually save a project later on?
