I thought the 60-30-10 rule was just a design school cliche until I tried it on a website for a local bakery in Charlotte last month.

I was skeptical, but using 60% white, 30% a warm sage green, and 10% a bright raspberry for buttons and highlights made the whole layout feel balanced and intentional without me overthinking it, so has anyone else found a 'basic' color theory rule that actually works better than you expected?

What about the 3-color max rule? I used to cram in way more and it always looked messy lol

Yeah, that "balanced and intentional without overthinking it" part is the whole point, right? It's like @uma_patel19 said about the 3-color max, it stops you from making a mess. I see this everywhere now, like how a good recipe only needs a few key ingredients. When you have too many options, you just start throwing stuff in and it never turns out right. These rules work because they cut through the noise.
