Spent 6 hours on a navy blue button, contrast checker saved me at 11pm
I was redoing a checkout form for a local bakery in Portland and nearly shipped a navy button with dark text on it because my monitor looked fine. After 6 hours of tweaking shadows and borders, I finally ran it through a free contrast tool and it came back at 2.1 to 1, way under the 4.5 minimum. Why do we always trust our eyes over the numbers when we know screens lie to us? Anyone else ever burn an evening like that on what should have been a 10 minute check?

Wait, did you really wait until 11pm to run the contrast check? That seems backwards, man. The whole point of those tools is you run them FIRST, before you start tweaking shadows and borders for 6 hours. You basically baked a cake and then checked if the eggs were expired. And honestly, most color pickers let you test your hex codes as you go, so you should have caught that navy text vs navy button combo within the first 5 minutes, not the last. I get that screens lie, but that's exactly why you set the tool up as a live preview, not a final check. Next time, just pop the contrast checker in the browser before you even touch the CSS, saves you a whole evening.
