Picked dark mode for my portfolio site even though everyone says light is safer

I spent two weeks going back and forth on my photography portfolio, and I went with a charcoal background with off-white text even though every accessibility guide I saw pushes for light backgrounds. The contrast ratio checked out at 7.5:1 on WCAG AA, but my friend said it still looks too moody for client work. Has anyone else gone against the grain on dark themes and had it work out okay?

Dark backgrounds work fine for portfolios when done right, especially for photography where the images need to pop. Your contrast ratio is solid, so accessibility shouldn't be an issue. The trick is making sure your images have enough light elements or whitespace around them so they don't get lost in the dark theme. What kind of photography do you shoot?
