My eye doctor in Boise told me my color vision is "normal" and now I trust contrast checkers less
I got my yearly eye exam about 3 weeks ago and mentioned I design websites, so I asked how good my color vision really is. He ran the plates and shrugged and said I was "normal," which means I catch the big stuff but miss tiny differences. That hit different because I have been checking my palettes by eye for years and calling it good enough. Now I run every text color through a checker and most of my old favorites came back failing hard. So what do you all do when your own eyes are the least reliable tool in the room?
Small thing but the plates test is not really grading how well you see color, it is screening for color blindness. There is a big gap between passing that and being able to notice a 2 percent brightness difference between two grays. Passing means you do not have a red-green problem, it does not mean your eyes are a good tool for contrast. Which is kind of the point you landed on anyway, an eye doctor checks for eye health and disease, not whether your body text passes WCAG. The checkers are doing a different job than he was, so trusting them more is not really a knock on him.
