My client's pastel login page failed a contrast test at their office
Last month I redid a bakery site's login screen with soft pinks and creams, looked great on my monitor. But the client pulled it up on their cheap office projector and said "I literally can't see the buttons." Ran it through a checker, turns out that text was sitting at like 2.8:1. What's your minimum contrast ratio for pastel-heavy designs, or do you just avoid them altogether?

Honestly, I think the projector was the thing that failed, not your design. Those cheap office projectors are notoriously bad, they wash out colors something fierce and have terrible contrast on their own. If the client had pulled it up on a decent laptop screen or even their phone, you'd probably be looking at a perfectly readable 4.5:1 or better. Chasing contrast ratios for every worst-case display out there is a losing game, you'd end up with a website that looks like a newspaper. The real fix is telling the client to check it on a proper screen and maybe have a dark mode option, not abandoning the pastel look that fits their brand perfectly.
