I was sure my new site's color scheme was fine until my friend in Seattle couldn't read the button text.

Oh man, that exact thing happened to me! I used to pick colors just because they looked good together on my screen. Then my cousin tried to use my blog and couldn't see the links at all. It turns out his monitor was way less bright than mine. Now I always check the contrast with one of those online tools before I call anything finished. It really opened my eyes to how different everyone's setup is.
