I think dark mode with low contrast text is actually HARDER to read than light mode

I've been arguing with my coworker Steve about this for a month now ever since he redesigned our store's internal website. He put dark gray text on a black background and calls it 'easy on the eyes'. Last Thursday I had to stare at a screen for 6 hours doing inventory reports and my eyes were KILLING me. Light mode with proper black on white has been around forever for a reason. Has anyone else actually tested both modes side by side with the same text size and found dark mode worse?

YES this is exactly my experience too. Dark gray on black is a NIGHTMARE.

I gotta push back on this a little. "Dark gray on black" might be a headache for some but honestly I've been using that kind of setup for years and it's fine for me. Maybe your monitor brightness is cranked too high or you got the wrong contrast settings. I actually prefer it over bright white backgrounds cause my eyes don't get fried after a few hours of reading.
