Gray on white looked fine to me until I tested it on a $99 projector last night

I was picking colors for a slideshow and kept failing the contrast checker with a 4.5:1 ratio, so I tried 7:1 and suddenly the text was readable from across the room, anyone else surprised by how much ambient light changes what passes?

Man, did you ever try dimming the lights to half and running that same checker, cause I'm wondering if the ratio even matters once you factor in where the projector sits?
