Got kicked out of a client meeting in Denver because my slides were unreadable on the projector
Last month I was in Denver for a small freelance gig, helping a local shop put together a menu board and some flyers. I had all my slides set up on my laptop at home and they looked fine, nice light gray text on a white background, felt clean and modern. Then I plugged into their old projector in this bright room with the blinds open, and you could not read a single word. The owner, this guy named Ray, squinted at the screen for maybe ten seconds and then just said 'nope, can't see it' and asked me to step outside while they talked. I stood in the hallway for like 15 minutes feeling like a total amateur. Turns out that light gray I loved was sitting at something like a 1.8 to 1 contrast ratio, which is basically invisible under any real light. Since then I run everything through a checker before I show anyone anything, and I test in a bright room, not on my dim laptop screen. Does anyone else have a go to ratio they aim for on things people will actually read, like signs or menus?
