A stranger's blunt note made me stop trusting my monitor for contrast

Last month I posted a menu design here and someone said the gray on white looked fine on my screen but would fail at 60% brightness on a phone. I brushed it off because my calibration seemed perfect. Then I printed it on the store's laser printer and that same gray basically vanished against the paper. I switched to a darker charcoal and added a thin border at the last second, and the owner actually commented the specials were easier to read during the lunch rush. Now I do a quick print test on cheap paper before I send anything to a client, even if it costs me an extra 15 minutes. Has anyone else had a plain printout reveal contrast issues that your monitor completely hid?
