A friend told me my website's light gray text on white was 'clean' and I had to disagree.

We were looking at my portfolio on her laptop in a bright cafe, and she couldn't read half the project descriptions. Has anyone else had to push back when someone calls low contrast 'stylish'?

Is "clean" the new word for "unreadable"? I've seen so many sites lately where you have to squint just to find the menu. Good design should work in a sunny cafe, not just a dark room. Your friend proved your point by not being able to read it. Low contrast isn't a style, it's a filter for people with perfect vision.

The "filter for people with perfect vision" part is exactly right. I've noticed this too where designers act like subtle gray text on a white background is somehow sophisticated. It's not sophisticated, it's just annoying. My eyes aren't even that bad and I still have to zoom in on half the sites I visit just to read the navigation. Accessibility shouldn't be an afterthought, it should be the first thing you check.

My own mom couldn't read my site last week.
