The no-semicolon rule broke my button for 2 days straight

I kept putting "onclick" handlers on my buttons without semicolons after the code, because some tutorial said to skip them. The button worked in the browser but threw errors in my JS console that took me forever to trace back to a missing semicolon in a loop. Is there a real reason beginners should stop skipping semicolons, or was that tutorial just plain wrong?
