Spent 6 months coding without version control and didn't know it

I was building a little weather app for my portfolio and kept saving files with names like 'final_v3_actuallyfinal.html' all on my desktop. Then a buddy from a local coding meetup in Austin asked to see my Git repo and I had no idea what he was talking about. Anyone else start out just dragging folders around before they learned how to track changes properly?

holy crap, six months?? i would've lost my mind. i barely made it two weeks before i nuked a whole project by dragging the wrong folder to the trash.

Is it really that big of a deal though? I mean yeah it's annoying but it's not like you lost the project forever if you had a backup or version control. Six months of crying over code seems more like a choice than a disaster.
