PSA: Your machine's real spindle speed might be 8% off the panel number, and a $22 tach from Amazon proved it to me
I always trusted the RPM readout on my Haas VF-2 like it was gospel. Last month a buddy who does motor work handed me a cheap laser tach he got off Amazon for $22 and told me to stick a piece of reflective tape on a tool holder and check it. At a commanded 8000 RPM the tach showed 7360. That is 8% low, which does not sound like much until you run the math on surface footage for a 1/2 inch end mill in 6061. My feed rates were basically guesses built on a wrong number for two years. I called my HFO and the tech said belt slip plus an old calibration can easily cause that drift, and they charge $600 to come re-calibrate. I bought the tach instead and now I check all three of our mills every quarter. Anyone else found their spindle running off from the panel number, or am I the only one who never thought to check?
